The QEW Garden City Skyway Bridge Twinning Project will add a new 2.2‑kilometre bridge north of the existing Garden City Skyway, spanning the Welland Canal between St. Catharines and Niagara‑on‑the‑Lake. The project is being delivered by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and Infrastructure Ontario (IO).
The new bridge, once completed, will carry all traffic, while a separate project will undergo major rehabilitation of the original 1963 Garden City Skyway. This approach, identified as the preferred solution in the 2017 Environmental Assessment, will maintain traffic flow and improve safety during rehabilitation of the original bridge. Once both bridge projects are complete, the new bridge will carry Toronto‑bound traffic, while the rehabilitated bridge will carry Niagara‑bound traffic.
Project Benefits
• Improved Safety: Wider shoulders and modern design standards will enhance safety for drivers and emergency services.
• Reduced Congestion: By separating Toronto‑bound and Niagara‑bound traffic, the twin bridges will reduce delays and keep traffic moving efficiently.
• Long‑Term Capacity: Supports current daily traffic volumes—averaging 106,000 vehicles—and prepares the corridor for future growth.
• Supports Regional Growth: Enhances connectivity between communities, businesses, and trade routes across the Niagara Region.
• Alignment with Regional Plans: Complements future highway expansion projects outlined in Connecting the GGH: A Transportation Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
